Abstract

Abstract (English)

Indonesia has a high intensity of sunlight that can damage the skin due to UV ray exposure. The leaves of the ketapang tree (Terminalia catappa L.) contain strong antioxidant compounds such as flavonoids that have the potential to be used as a natural sunscreen. This study aims to determine the sunscreen activity of the ethanolic extract of fallen ketapang leaves as well as the protection category of the ethanolic extract of fallen ketapang leaves. The extract was obtained using a maceration method with 70% ethanol, which was then concentrated and tested for its sunscreen activity in vitro using a UV-Vis spectrophotometer at concentrations of 200–600 ppm, and the SPF value was calculated based on Mansur's formula. Based on the results of the tests conducted, at a concentration of 500 ppm, the extract of fallen ketapang leaves falls into the ultra protection category with an average SPF value from 3 replicates of 15.49. The average SPF values from 3 replications of ethanol extract from fallen ketapang leaves at concentrations of 200, 300, 400, 500, and 600 ppm are 6,31; 9,91; 14,52; 15,49; dan 20,25, respectively. It can be concluded that the ethanol extract of fallen ketapang leaves has sunscreen activity.
