Abstract
Abstract (English)
Indonesia, as a country with high biodiversity and abundant natural resources, has long utilized natural ingredients as traditional medicine. Some chemical compounds such as saponins, tannins, flavonoids, and alkaloids are known to have the potential to be mucolytic or phlegm thinners. This study aims to evaluate the mucolytic activity of ethanol extract of cloves (Syzygium aromaticum) in vitro, using duck egg whites as an artificial sputum model. The mucolytic activity of the extract was tested at concentrations of 0.5%, 1%, and 1.5%, as well as compared with negative controls and acetylcysteine 0.2% as positive controls. Phytochemical screening shows the presence of flavonoids, saponins, and tannins in clove flower extract (Syzygium aromaticum). Mucolytic activity was measured using the Brookfield LVT230 viscometer to determine viscosity. The results showed that the concentrations of 0.5%, 1%, and 1.5% had mucolytic activity in duck eggs in vitro. This suggests that clove flower extract (Syzygium aromaticum) at all concentrations has potential as an effective mucolytic agent.
